Can You Really Rewire a House in One Day? Here Is How We Do It

When most homeowners hear that a full house rewire can be completed in a single day, the reaction is predictable: scepticism. A traditional rewire takes seven to ten days. Surely compressing that into one day means cutting corners?

The answer is no. A one day house rewire does not mean less work. It means more electricians, better planning, and a level of coordination that most electrical contractors simply cannot deliver. At Manchester Compliance Ltd, we are the only company in the North West that offers a genuine single-day full house rewire for properties up to three bedrooms, and every installation meets the same BS 7671 standards, the same NICEIC requirements, and carries the same certification as any traditional rewire.

Here is exactly how we do it.

Why Most Rewires Take a Week or More

A traditional rewire is typically carried out by one or two electricians working through the property circuit by circuit. They strip out old wiring, run new cables, install new sockets and switches, fit a new consumer unit, and carry out testing. Working sequentially, this process naturally stretches across seven to ten working days.

During that time, the property is usually uninhabitable. The power is off for extended periods. Floorboards are lifted. Walls are chased. Dust and disruption are constant companions. For homeowners, it means arranging alternative accommodation. For landlords, it means a void period with no rental income.

The work itself is not the problem. The timeline is. And the timeline is a function of team size, not job complexity.

The Manchester Compliance Approach: Parallel, Not Sequential

Our one day house rewire works on a fundamentally different model. Instead of one or two electricians working sequentially through the property, we deploy a team of four qualified electricians who work simultaneously across different areas of the house.

Think of it this way: if one electrician takes eight days to rewire a house, eight electricians working in a coordinated, planned operation can complete the same volume of work in a single day. The total number of labour hours is comparable. The difference is that those hours are compressed into one intensive day rather than spread across a week or more.

This is not a novel concept in construction. Large commercial projects routinely deploy multiple trades working in parallel. We have simply applied the same principle to domestic rewiring, with the planning, supervision, and quality control systems to make it work reliably.

The Process: From Survey to Switch-On

Stage 1: The Pre-Rewire Survey

Every one day house rewire begins well before the team arrives. We carry out a detailed survey of the property, assessing the existing installation, identifying the cable routes, planning the circuit layout, and confirming the scope of work.

During the survey, we establish:

  • The number and location of all circuits required
  • Socket and switch positions (agreed with you)
  • Consumer unit location
  • Smoke and heat detector positions
  • Any specific requirements such as outdoor sockets, data cabling, or EV charger preparation
  • Access requirements and any structural considerations
This survey is critical. On the day itself, every electrician knows exactly what they are doing and where they are working. There is no time lost to decision-making or design changes on site.

Stage 2: Day One — The Rewire

Our team of four qualified electricians arrives at 7:30am. The day follows a structured sequence:

Strip-out phase. The old wiring is removed. Old sockets, switches, and the existing consumer unit are taken out. Floorboards are lifted where necessary and cable routes are prepared.

First fix. New cables are run throughout the property. This is the most labour-intensive phase and where the parallel working model delivers its greatest advantage. While one electrician is running cables in the loft, another is working on the ground floor circuits, another is handling the kitchen and bathroom, and another is fitting the new consumer unit. Every circuit is run with new twin and earth or LSOH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) cable to current standards.

Second fix. New sockets, switches, light fittings, smoke detectors, and heat detectors are installed. The consumer unit is populated and connected.

Testing. Every circuit undergoes full testing in accordance with BS 7671: Requirements for Electrical Installations (18th Edition). This includes insulation resistance testing, earth fault loop impedance testing, RCD testing, and polarity checks. The testing phase is non-negotiable and is carried out to the same standard regardless of whether the rewire took one day or ten.

Power on. By the evening, the property has a fully operational electrical installation. Lights work. Sockets work. The consumer unit is live and all circuits are protected.

Stage 3: Days Two and Three — Plastering and Making Good

The rewire itself is complete in one day, but the cosmetic making good follows over the next two to three days. Chased walls need plastering. Lifted floorboards are re-secured. The property is left clean and tidy, ready for decoration.

This is the same process that follows a traditional rewire. The only difference is that the electrical work is finished before the plasterer even arrives, rather than both trades overlapping across a full week.

Addressing the Quality Concern

The most common question we hear is: "If it is done in one day, how can it be as good as a traditional rewire?"

It is a fair question, and it deserves a direct answer.

The quality of a rewire is not determined by how many days it takes. It is determined by:

  • The competence of the electricians carrying out the work. Every member of our team is a qualified electrician. They are not apprentices learning on the job. They are experienced professionals who carry out rewires regularly.
  • The materials used. We use the same high-quality cables, consumer units, accessories, and components that any reputable contractor would use.
  • The testing carried out. The test results do not lie. Every circuit is tested to BS 7671 standards, and the results are documented on the Electrical Installation Certificate.
  • The certification issued. Every rewire receives a full Electrical Installation Certificate, and the work is notified to Building Control through our NICEIC Approved Contractor registration under Part P of the Building Regulations.
In many respects, a coordinated team approach is more controlled than a lone electrician working over multiple days. With a larger team, there is built-in supervision. The lead electrician oversees the entire installation. Quality is checked at every stage rather than relying on one person to self-certify their own work at the end of a long week.

What You Get at the End

Every one day house rewire from Manchester Compliance includes:

  • New consumer unit (metal enclosure with RCBOs or dual RCD protection)
  • All new circuits — lighting, ring mains, radials, dedicated circuits for cooker, shower, and other high-demand appliances
  • New sockets and switches throughout
  • Smoke detectors and heat detectors to current regulations
  • Full earthing and bonding to BS 7671 requirements
  • Electrical Installation Certificate
  • Part P Building Regulations notification via NICEIC
  • 6-year guarantee on all workmanship
The certificate and guarantee are identical to those issued for a traditional rewire. There is no difference in what you receive — only in how quickly you receive it.

Who Benefits Most from a One-Day Rewire?

While any homeowner can benefit from reduced disruption, certain situations make a one day house rewire particularly valuable:

  • Landlords who need to minimise void periods between tenancies
  • Homeowners who cannot easily relocate for a week during a traditional rewire
  • Properties being renovated where the rewire is on the critical path for other trades
  • Families with young children or elderly relatives who need their home back as quickly as possible
  • Buy-to-let investors refurbishing properties for the rental market

The Only Company in the North West Offering This Service

Manchester Compliance is the only electrical contractor in the North West that can deliver a full house rewire in a single day for properties up to three bedrooms. This is not a service that any contractor can offer. It requires a large enough team of qualified electricians, the systems to plan and coordinate parallel working, and the experience to deliver consistent quality under time pressure.

We have refined this process over years of domestic and commercial electrical work, and it is now one of the most popular services we provide.
