How Long Does a House Rewire Take?

Signs Your House Needs Rewiring

Not every property needs a full house rewire, but if you're noticing any of the following warning signs, it's worth getting a professional electrical assessment. These are the most common indicators that UK electricians look for when deciding whether a home needs rewiring:

- Your home still has an old fuse box. If your property has a rewirable fuse board rather than a modern consumer unit with RCDs, the wiring is likely outdated. - Rubber or fabric-insulated cables. Modern wiring uses PVC insulation. If you can see old rubber or fabric-covered cables at light fittings or in the loft, the wiring needs replacing. - Cracked or discoloured sockets. Yellowing, cracking, or burn marks around sockets and switches can indicate overheating and deteriorating wiring behind the walls. - Lights flicker or dim regularly. Persistent flickering or dimming across the property often points to a wiring problem. - Burning smell with no obvious source. A burning smell near sockets, switches, or the fuse board should be investigated immediately. - Fuses or trip switches blow frequently. Regular tripping is your electrical system telling you something isn't right. - Not enough sockets. If you're relying on extension leads and adaptors throughout the house, the electrical system isn't meeting modern demands. - Property hasn't been rewired in 25+ years. Wiring degrades over time. The IET recommends domestic installations are inspected at least every ten years.

What Does a Full House Rewire Involve?

A full house rewire means replacing all the electrical wiring throughout the property, from the meter position through to every socket, switch, and light fitting. In the UK, all rewiring work must comply with BS 7671 (the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations) and Part P of the Building Regulations. Here's what a typical house rewire includes:

- New consumer unit — A modern consumer unit with RCD protection, replacing the old fuse board. - New cables throughout — All old wiring is removed and replaced with new Twin & Earth cables run through walls, floors, and ceilings. - New sockets and switches — All back boxes, faceplates, and accessories replaced with new. - New light fittings — All ceiling roses and light fittings replaced. - Full testing and certification — Every circuit is tested and an Electrical Installation Certificate is issued. - Building Regulations notification — As an NICEIC Approved Contractor, we notify Building Control on your behalf and issue a compliance certificate.

How Long Does a House Rewire Take in the UK?

This is the question every homeowner asks. With a traditional electrician working alone, a full house rewire in the UK typically takes 7 to 10 days. That's over a week of your home being turned upside down, with cables hanging out of walls, no power in certain rooms, and dust everywhere. Then you're waiting for a plasterer, which could be another week or more.

At Manchester Compliance, we do things differently.

We Complete Full Rewires in Just 1 Day

Instead of sending one electrician to work alone for a week and a half, we send a full team of specialist electricians who work together to complete the entire rewire — first fix and second fix — in a single day.
